If you love to explore the lesser traveled parts of Maine, you need to spend some time in Southwestern Maine.  Cruise Route 302, Route 113, Route 25, etc.  You'll cruise through towns like Brownfield, Fryeburg, Hiram, Baldwin, and Cornish.

As you travel along, mixed in with the modern houses and doublewides, you'll probably see some houses that look like they came just out of the past.  There's a good reason for that.  Many of the houses in this part of Maine were built in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

For example, the old farmhouse at 161 Old High Road in Cornish.

According to Realtor.com, the home was constructed in 1777!  The colonial style home has about 3,200 square feet of space and sits on a 1 1/2 acre lot.  It has 5 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bathrooms.  The place has several fireplaces and exposed beams.  Even though you can definitely tell the home was built in the 1700s, it has been modernized a lot.  The kitchen is massive and beautiful and the poured concrete basement is a recent addition.

There is even a semi-finished space in the basement that would make a great workshop, office, or playroom for the kids.

1777 House

Located on Old High Road in Cornish, Maine, this home has been around since the Revolutionary War. It was built in 1777, during the height of the war. And, even though it is nearly 250 years old, it has had a lot of recent improvements. In March of 2022, the list price was just over $350,000. Get more details HERE

As of March 2022, the list price is $354,500.  Assuming you put $85,000 down at closing, your monthly payment would be about $1,700 per month.  Not too bad.  Of course, that includes mortgage, taxes, etc.

The only real downside of the property is the remoteness.  Of course, some people would welcome that ability to get away from it all.  But, for those who are still a part of the workforce, it might make getting to work a little bit of a challenge.
