Going Fishing? Here Are 5 Types of Fish You Can Catch in Maine
When it comes to outdoor activities in Maine, there is certainly no shortage of things to do. From hiking and biking to motorcycle riding, kayaking, camping and everything in between, there is always something to do in the Pine Tree State.
However, one of our most treasured pastimes is fishing. And with thousands of ponds, lakes, streams and rivers to choose from, there is certainly no shortage of places to enjoy this classic activity.
And, when it comes to fish species in Maine, we also have no shortage of those either. According to specie information from Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, Maine is home to dozens of fish types including trout, salmon, bass, pickerel, alewives, cusk, pike and more.
But what are some of the most common fish and ones you can expect to catch the most? Let's dive in- pun intended.
First up is the largemouth bass. A fan favorite among anglers nationwide, the largemouth bass is always a joy to catch whether you're young or old. And since they're pretty numb, you can catch these things with just about anything. Anyone ever tried fishing with a hotdog?
Next up is our good buddy, the landlocked salmon. A true fighter on any line, the landlocked salmon is fun to catch year round. Whether you're trolling on Moosehead Lake or you're ice fishing in the middle of January.
Oh the joy of catching a yellow perch. For most kids, this is the very first fish they ever catch. These little dudes love snagging a worm on a hook and bobber and are just small enough for kids to handle themselves while still putting up a decent battle.
I wasn't going to make this list personal, however, I have a love/hate relationship with pickerel. I get it, always better to catch a pickerel than no fish at all, but I always seem to get into a school of pickerel when I'm actually trying to land a honk-donking largemouth. But alas, I digress.
Last, and probably also least, is the sunfish. This fish has probably been around for 7 trillion years and, like the sunfish, this is a species that is commonly caught by your youngest and newest anglers.
