When it comes to the healthcare system, there are a lot of intricacies that go into the 'behind the scenes' operations that many of us never see.

When it comes to visiting the hospital in Maine, we're fortunate to have so many to choose from, considering how rural Maine is. Sure, there are some parts of Maine where the nearest medical facility is more than an hour away by car, however, for the majority of the Maine population, a quality and well-equipped hospital is closely  in reach.

Which Maine hospital is running out of cash?

According to an article published by WGME 13, one of Maine's premier hospitals is running low on cash- like, really low. The article goes on to explain that Lewiston's St. Mary's hospital only has enough cash left in the bank to continue operating for about the next 10 days.

Hospital officials attribute the 'cash crisis' to a lack of Medicare funds that were supposed to have been reimbursed to the hospital. St. Mary's officials say that the Federal Government is withholding funds from them that are critical to the hospital's future success and operation.

What is the hospital doing about this?

WGME 13 goes on to report that St. Mary's hospital has filed a lawsuit against the federal government, claiming they have not yet been paid out the Medicare reimbursements that are owed to them.

The hospital claims in the suit that the Federal Government, Department of Health & Human Services, unlawfully required the hospital to repay the pandemic relief funds that they received during the COVID outbreak. The hospital claims that those funds were used exactly how they were supposed to be and should not have been made to pay them back.

As a result of all this, the hospital says it only has about 10 days worth of operational funds remaining in the bank. As you can imagine, that is a critically low level of cash for any large healthcare system to have available to them.
