Maine Drivers Stuck After Breathalyzer System Goes Down
A cyberattack is causing major problems for drivers in Maine and across the country who rely on ignition interlock devices to start their vehicles.
According to WGME, the company at the center of the issue, Intoxalock, was targeted in a widespread attack that has shut down its system nationwide. The outage is impacting drivers in Maine and 45 other states who are required to use the breathalyzer-style devices following OUI convictions.
These devices require drivers to pass a breath test before their vehicle will start. If a user registers a blood alcohol level of 0.02 or higher, the car will not turn on. However, due to the cyberattack, the system has been offline since Saturday, leaving many drivers completely locked out of their vehicles regardless of sobriety.
One Maine driver says the situation has been frustrating and disruptive. He explained that anyone affected has been unable to drive since the outage began, which has created serious challenges for those who rely on their vehicles daily.
WGME reported that Intoxalock says hackers are overwhelming its servers, preventing them from functioning properly. The company adds that while the outage is widespread, user data remains secure. It has not confirmed whether a ransom demand was made.
For some drivers, the impact is more severe than others. Those without alternative transportation options have been left stranded, especially in rural areas.
State officials say they are aware of the situation and are working with the company as it tries to restore service. In the meantime, affected drivers may explore other approved vendors through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
