Maine Makes Waves at the Kennebec Valley YMCA Cardboard Boat Race
Get ready to test your creativity and maybe your balance at the Kennebec Valley YMCA’s Regatta 2026.
On Sunday, March 22nd at 12 PM, the KVYMCA competition pool in Augusta will turn into a floating festival of cardboard, duct tape, and pure determination. The challenge is simple. Build a boat using ONLY cardboard and duct tape. No other materials allowed. Then pick two team members brave enough to climb aboard and race, or at least attempt to race, down the pool.
Entry is just $25 per team, and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Whether your boat slices through the water like a luxury yacht or slowly dissolves into a soggy memory, you are guaranteed laughs, cheers, and plenty of community spirit. Awards will take place immediately following the races, and there will be concessions and a 50/50 raffle available for spectators and participants.
Boats must be built ahead of time, so now is the moment to gather your family, recruit your coworkers, or challenge your friends to a little friendly competition. Creativity is encouraged. Team costumes are highly recommended. Staying afloat is optional but strongly advised.
Regatta 2026 is more than just a race. It is a fun, high energy way to support the YMCA and the programs that strengthen our local community.
Think you have what it takes to build it and float it? Sign up, start designing, and get ready to make waves on March 22nd.
