After a record-breaking blast of May heat in the Portland area, Maine is about to get a little relief just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

According to WGME, Portland hit 92 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the old daily record of 86 degrees set back in 1949. That also makes it Portland’s hottest May temperature in nine years.

Mainers will get one more hot and humid day Wednesday before a cold front moves through the state. Highs are expected to climb back into the mid-to-upper 80s, with some spots getting close to 90 degrees again. A west wind could gust up to 30 miles per hour, helping keep the air moving.

The front will also bring the chance for a shower or thunderstorm, especially Wednesday afternoon. The mountains may see some activity earlier in the day.

Behind that front, things start to feel a lot better. Temperatures drop back into the 60s for the end of the week, and the humidity will ease up in a big way. Some inland spots could even dip into the upper 30s by Friday morning, with frost possible in the mountains.

As for Memorial Day weekend, the forecast looks pretty decent overall. High pressure is expected to build in, bringing some clouds but keeping rain chances fairly low through most of the weekend.

The best news? Rain looks like it should hold off until Memorial Day itself on Monday.

So if your weekend plans include camp openings, cookouts, parades, yard work, or finally dragging the patio furniture out of storage, Saturday and Sunday are looking like the better days to get outside.

The longer-range forecast keeps Maine warmer than normal heading into the final days of May, with below-normal rainfall expected to continue.
