Will Maine’s School Mock Election Correctly Predict Our Next President?
Let me start by saying that I was shocked to learn that the Maine school mock election has correctly predicted the next U.S. president since 2008 when Barack Obama won.
According to the Kennebec Journal, the only time the Maine mock election was wrong was in 2020 when Maine schools did not re-elect Senator Susan Collins. Other than that, the track record has been completely on point.
Now, let me be clear, this is not some political hit-piece or an opinion and/or agenda-driven article, I'm simply here to deliver the facts as presented by the Kennebec Journal.
In their article, they explain that more than 140 Maine schools participated in this year's mock election. And as they always do, they have announced the winners of the election and shown the margin by which each candidate won or lost.
Now that the Maine Secretary of State's Office has tallied the votes, let's see how the votes fell.
Starting with the big one, the president.
Maine schools handily elected former President Donald J. Trump with a total of 52% of the vote while Democratic challenger, Vice President Kamala Harris, received 40.80% of the vote, according to the newspaper.
When it comes to the Senate race, incumbent Angus King won in a landslide against his competition racking up a whopping 43.4% of the vote with the rest being shared across the three other contenders on the ballot, the KJ reported.
The newspaper said that when it comes to Maine's two congressional districts, incumbent Chellie Pingree (D) won by a decent margin at 40.9% of the overall vote. However, District Two was much closer of a race.
In District Two, the results were so close between Theriault and Golden that, per the law, it would have required a runoff. The percentages were 48.8 and 49.3 respectively, the KJ reported.
Now, the question is, do you think these mock-election results from Maine schools will properly predict the results of this coming Tuesday's real election?
