Maine Police Officer Injured After Scuffle at Homeless Encampment With Armed Man

A Maine police officer was injured on Wednesday after a scuffle ensued while trying to take a suspect into custody at a homeless encampment.

According to WGME 13 and the Bangor Daily News, police were called to an area homeless camp in the city of Bangor after getting reports that a man there was brandishing a firearm.

When police arrived, they encountered 37-year-old Trevor Lyons, who had been living at the encampment in an attempt to avoid the police who had been searching for him because of outstanding warrants.

Prior to Wednesday, police had attempted to take Lyons into custody at his Bangor home but were unable because he was evading them by staying at the area homeless encampment.

When police tried to take him into custody on Wednesday a scuffle broke out which ultimately ended in at least one officer being injured. Eventually, Lyons was taken into police custody at the Valley Avenue encampment.

Lyons was taken to the Penobscot County Jail where he is being held on charges of criminal threatening and four outstanding warrants, though WGME is reporting this morning that more charges are still possible.

There is no word yet on the type and severity of the officer's injuries of if that officer needed medical attention following the scuffle. We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
