Maine Slang: Here's What Your Kids Are Saying in Text Messages

You know how it goes with kids right? They've got a whole array of nicknames for you in this day in age. Let's not blame it all on TikTok, but you if you know, you know.

You've got your classics like "Mom, Mama, and Mommy," but then there are those moments when you become "Bro, Bru, Dude, etc."

I can't help but chuckle at the creativity that our kiddos have created with these new words. It's like they have their own secret language!

If your little one is at the texting stage, then this is for you. If you're desperately trying to decode what they're saying, this might just save your sanity!

Have you ever had a conversation with a teenager or preteen that leaves you wondering, "What did they just say?", but you pretend you understand anyway?

According to WGME, a podcast called Raising ME (hosted by Adrienne Stein) featured Shannan King from G.E.A.R Parent Network.

As per the article, Shannan specializes in teaching a class about understanding slang and its significance. And a lot of us are shaking are heads right now in approval, because even though this may not have been something we needed 10 years ago, it certainly is now.

For example, according to Educational First, here are a few words that I have had to understand:

IYKYK: "If You Know, You Know"

SLAY: To look really good

Touch Grass: Get a grip

YEET: To throw it, or fling it like a piece of trash

It's Giving: To describe the vibe or feeling something is giving

Situationship: In between being friends and in a relationship

Shannan helps us decode and figure out some of the words and phrases you might encounter your kids using at home or on their devices, according to the article. With new words comes new boundaries as well. She covers texting terms to help ensure your teens' safe online communication.

At the end of the day, we don't really care what new words our kids are using, as long as we know that they are safe!
