The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) confirmed Tuesday that a Maine resident has tested positive for the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, marking the state’s first human case this year.

Health officials say the individual became seriously ill in late August and is currently hospitalized with severe symptoms. WABI TV 5 is reporting that while the results are being considered presumptive positive, final confirmation is pending from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

EEE is a rare but dangerous mosquito-borne virus that cannot spread from person to person, or between people and animals. The news station said that transmission occurs strictly through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The Maine CDC has raised concern over elevated mosquito activity, stating that the risk of mosquito-borne disease is high across the state. Certain regions, according to WABI, including Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Waldo counties are experiencing particularly severe risk levels due to both documented virus activity and favorable conditions for mosquitos that carry EEE.

The article goes on to explain that typical symptoms of Eastern Equine Encephalitis include fever, headache, and body aches, similar to the flu. However, in more severe cases, the illness can progress to cause brain inflammation (encephalitis) or spinal cord swelling (meningitis). These types of complications often require hospitalization and can be fatal.

EEE, along with other mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus and Jamestown Canyon virus, is rare but potentially deadly. Officials urge Maine residents to take precautions such as wearing insect repellent, limiting outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed.

The Maine CDC says the situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided once the U.S. CDC finalizes its test results.
