Look Up! Maine Will See A Rare Ring of Fire Eclipse This Week
I remember in high school when it was time to sign up for our 'electives' each year I was always so anxious to sign up for astronomy class before it filled up. For three years in a row I was disappointed each time as I learned the class had already filled up. However, my senior year I finally got in! So you can imagine my fascination when it comes to solar events like eclipses.
Luckily for us Mainers, we're in the region of the county that is going to have some of the best views of this weeks rare 'ring of fire' solar eclipse. On Thursday, June 10th, the moon will pass in front of the sun but will not cover the entire star. The eclipse will appear as a big dark circle (the moon) with a bright outer ring of fire (the sun).
According to Space.Com the eclipse should begin just before we see the sunrise and will most likely be visible for upwards of an hour and forty minutes thereafter. So what we're getting at here is that you'll need to get up and outside fairly early. The sun is scheduled to rise at 4:54 AM on Thursday. Luckily, for those of us that work in morning radio, we will already be up drinking our coffee.
