One person is dead following a shooting on Tuesday morning near Highland Street in Waterville according to Maine State Police. Officials went on to say that the suspected shooter had been taken into custody following the incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

After the shooting, but before the suspect's apprehension, several area schools went into lockdown protocol as an extended safety measure.

Superintendent of RSU 18, Carl Gartley said in a statement,

“It was a very rapidly evolving situation and there was a lot of uncertainty around what was going on, so we decided to go on to lockout. It can be scary for the kids, so that’s why we communicate it with parents so they know what’s going on in their kids’ schools.”

At this time, the name of the victim and/or the suspected shooter have not been made public as the investigation into what transpired is still ongoing.

According to a release from the Maine State Police, troopers are currently assisting in an investigation that involved a shooting in the city of Waterville.

According to the Maine State Police, the shooting apparently happened in the area of Highwood Street. Though WMTW is reporting that they are not aware of any road closures affecting the morning commute.

Currently, the area on Highwood Street is where multiple law enforcement cruisers are staged and part of the area is roped off with crime scene tape.
