According to multiple posts on Facebook, a large and pretty deep sinkhole has opened up in an Augusta parking lot.

The Facebook poster said that the sinkhole opened up sometime during the day on Wednesday at Augusta's Ballard Center in the employee parking lot.

Additionally, it was said by staff members that a brand new SUV that still had temporary license plates on it was but mere feet away from the giant hole and was close to being swallowed up- fortunately it was not.

It was also reported by those close to the scene that there were no reported injuries in relation to the sinkhole. It appears as though no one was close by when it opened up on Wednesday.

According to the United States Geological Survey,

When water from rainfall moves down through the soil, these types of rock begin to dissolve. This creates underground spaces and caverns. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a period of time until the underground spaces just get too big. If there is not enough support for the land above the spaces, then a sudden collapse of the land surface can occur.

This is a developing story and we will continue to follow along with it in case any more pertinent details become available. If that happens, we will share them inside the original article.
