Massachusetts & New Hampshire Seeing Massive Spike in Influenza Cases, Maine Not Far Behind
Flu cases are skyrocketing in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with Massachusetts currently rated as "very high" currently, according to the CDC's influenza surveillance report.
Maine is not far behind, creeping up in the alert status we are set to high and getting higher each week.
That means flu season is officially here, and it’s making a very big entrance in New England!
According to the CDC, "seasonal influenza activity continues to increase and is elevated across most of the country."
Check out the info graphic below for the status of your state.
What is causing the spike in flu cases?
It is reported that the flu season started earlier then what was expected. That's also combined with a lower uptake of flu vaccinations compared to previous years. Then, you add in a sprinkle of the crowds, stuffy indoor gatherings during the holidays, it's all a recipe for the perfect storm of influenza.
CDC says that the flu can shift,
"While flu viruses evolve genetically all the time and often undergo antigenic drift, antigenic shift happens infrequently. Flu pandemics occur rarely; there have been four flu pandemics in the past 100 years."
Thankfully, Maine is not quite at the level of our neighbors but it seems to be raising. I have been monitoring the report and it's only a matter of time, because it's been steadily climbing.
Because of that, I would like to help you protect yourself and your kiddos.
How to protect yourself and family from influenza
Get vaccinated. It’s not too late to roll up your sleeve and get your flu shot.
Wash those gorgeous hands.
Washing your hands frequently is one of the most simple and effective ways to stop germs from spreading. Also, stay home if you're sick, don't be a hero.
As we keep a close watch and brace ourselves for a potential surge in the coming weeks, make sure you are taking care of yourself and family to protect from the ever-spreading, influenza. Let's hope Maine dodges the worst of it!
