If you are looking for a fun way to spend a late summer (or early fall) weekend afternoon, take a drive down Route 302 to Raymond's Frozen Custard in Casco.

Located a few minutes' drive from Windham / Raymond, you may know this business as Dingley's.  Adjacent to the farm stand, in a small red building, is the best "ice cream" stand in that part of Maine.

 

How Is Frozen Custard Different Than Ice Cream?

According to Wikipedia, in addition to the cream, sugar, and flavoring that ice cream has, frozen custard adds eggs.  Just like regular custard, but frozen!  The addition of eggs gives it a creamier, more dense, consistency than ice cream.

Some people would say that it is quite a bit more like gelato than it is ice cream.

 

Around since the late 17th century, the first commercial frozen custard stands appeared in New York in the early 20th century.  The appearance of a frozen custard stand at the 1933 World's Fair increased the dessert's popularity.  Despite that, at least here in New England, frozen custard stands are few and far between.

 

Raymond's In Casco

Located next to a farm stand on the side of Route 302, the stand features a rotation of flavors that include vanilla, chocolate, black raspberry, whoopie pie, chocolate chip, and irish cream.

Additionally, the stand has other food available, too.  They cook up burgers, fries, onion rings, lobster rolls, and more.

The stand is seasonal - open from about Memorial Day until mid-September.
