This past Friday in Westbrook, News Center Maine's, Lee Goldberg and Amanda Hill joined 13 others at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland’s annual Shelter Sleep-In.

These amazing folks who care about animals, spent the night at the shelter. They slept alongside adoptable animals in hopes of making it their last night without a home. For many, that hope became a reality.

One adopter, Grace Stacey, attended the adoption event Saturday after losing her dog in June. She found her perfect match in Ghost, a wobbly kitten with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a neurological condition that affects coordination.

"He doesn’t know he has this condition—he just thinks he’s a regular cat," Stacey said.

Lee Goldberg of News Center, went live on Facebook to let his viewers know what he was up to as well as encourage folks to drop by and see the animals.

Maine doesn’t have an exact number of stray dogs, but it does have less strays compared to many other states.

This is because of the strong spay/neuter programs and effective shelters just like the ARLGP and the Maine Animal Welfare Program work hard to find homes for animals and reduce strays.

There are about 70 million stray animals across the U.S., according to PETA and Maine’s shelters often take in animals from other states because they’ve been so successful at managing local strays.

But they still get full and that's why events like this, help so much!

The Marketing Coordinator of ARLGP says that because of the event, they are more successful at adopting out these animals.

Matt said,

"Everything we do is thanks to people willing to sleep on the floor or donate,"

Matt shared that this year’s sixth annual donations surpassed last year’s $100,000, reaching an outstanding $103,815!
