Have you ever looked up at the Maine skies and heard a sound that didn’t quite make sense to you? And no, I’m not talking about the drones flying overhead.

There’s something else up there making that a noise, and it’s not what you might expect.

It's the mating call of our majestic bald eagle!

Bald eagles are fiercely massive birds, with intimidating eyes and a strength you could only wish for so normally, we’d mistaken their call for something terrifying, right?

WRONG. Movies make us believe that the powerful bald eagle has a loud, menacing screech. But in reality, the eagle's true call is quite different, according to WABI.

In fact, it’s actually very beautiful, light and whistly. It’s a series of high-pitched whistles, which is absolutely nothing like the loud and terrifying screeches we hear in movies.

According to WMTW, a recent video taken in Yarmouth, shows something that might surprise you about our national bird.

So, why the confusion with this?

It turns out that the iconic and scary sounds shown in movies actually belong to red-tailed hawk, as per WABI.

The hawks calls are louder and fit the bill for the dramatic movies we watch. And the bald eagle call is quiet, less imposing, and pretty sweet.

So, the next time you spot a bald eagle in Maine, you may not hear that screech, but don’t be disappointed, you’ll be delighted by their lovely sounding song.

Their true call is just as fascinating, if not more so.
