You’ve heard the old joke about deer crossing signs, they’re up on the road so deer know where to cross. Now, the same consideration will be given to turtles, at least in Southern Maine.

The turtle crossing signs will appear in South Berwick, Wells and York in hopes to alert drivers to turtles and hopefully save the lives of many of the half shelled creatures especially the endangered Blanding’s and spotted turtles.

This is all thanks to the Nature Conservancy and The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The sings will be seasonal.
