Two Hospitalized After Motorcycle Collides With Cow in Vassalboro, Maine
Two people were hospitalized Monday night after their motorcycle struck a cow on Riverside Drive.
According to Vassalboro Fire Chief Walker Thompson, the crash occurred around 7pm near 2486 Riverside Drive, just north of the Oak Grove Road intersection. A firefighter arriving on the scene found a motorcycle and two riders lying in the roadway and immediately notified dispatch.
The male operator and female passenger were both taken by Delta Ambulance to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta. The Kennebec Journal reported that Chief Thompson said the woman appeared to have significant injuries. Rescuers requested a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter for her, but no aircraft was available at the time.
The operator told officials that four cows were in the roadway and that they were unable to avoid one, striking it in the middle of the road. The KJ explained when emergency crews arrived, no cows remained at the scene. Riverside Drive, also U.S. Route 201, was closed for about two hours between Taylor and Oak Grove roads while Maine State Police reconstructed the crash.
“It’s a very unfortunate accident,” Thompson said.
The identities of the motorcycle riders had not been released by state police as of Tuesday.
In a separate motorcycle crash Monday evening, a Clinton man was injured when his bike drifted off Route 27 in Rome.
Kennebec County Chief Deputy Chris Read said the crash happened around 8:18 p.m. as Brent O. Perry, 52, was riding a 1973 Harley-Davidson northbound near the Rome Road intersection. When Perry drifted off the roadway, the bike slid as he attempted to reenter, ejecting him.
Perry was taken to MaineGeneral in Augusta, where he was treated and later released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
