A Fairfield, Maine, man was taken back into custody on Wednesday after briefly escaping a Skowhegan courtroom.

According to the Kennebec Journal, Nicholas Carter, who was in court on charges of assault on a child, briefly escaped the courtroom after getting the verdict. The newspaper reported that Carter ran out of the courtroom, down the stairs, through a hallway, and eventually out of the building before bolting across the street.

Fortunately, several police and court officials gave immediate chase and were able to re-apprehend Carter just moments after he had escaped, the KJ reported.

The newspaper said that as Carter made it across the street, still in handcuffs, he tripped and fell before two jurors held him until police could help.

You can see footage of some of the escape here:

Dawn DiBlasi, Skowhegan’s town manager and a lawyer, told the Kennebec Journal over the phone,

“All of sudden, we hear this huge bang. Crash. Boom. And this guy comes running down the stairs. He’s handcuffed or shackled. He’s trying to escape. Literally, he’s got his hands on the railing, coming down, trying to jump three stairs at a time. His feet weren’t shackled.”

The Kennebec Journal said that Carter had been found guilty during a 3-day trial on accusations of aggravated assault on a child just over a year old and will be sentenced at a later time.
