Good Samaritan Pulls Woman From Kennebec River in Waterville, Maine, Wednesday
Sometimes we don't decide when we're going to become heroes.
In fact, almost always, the moment chooses us. And I use the term "us" lightly because most of us (fortunately) will never be in a situation where we have to leap into a dangerous river to save another person.
However, that's exactly what happened Wednesday, August 7, in the north end of the park at Head of Falls in Waterville, Maine.
According to an article published by the Kennebec Journal, Devin Hubbard, a Waterville resident, was hanging out at Head of Falls enjoying the beautiful weather on Wednesday afternoon when he began to hear calls for help.
After figuring out where the sound was coming from, Hubbard said he saw a woman in the Kennebec River yelling for someone to help her as the water and current were pulling her downstream, according to the newspaper.
Without hesitation, Devin scaled the dangerous wall down to the water's edge and jumped into the water, the KJ reported. At this time, other bystanders had already begun placing emergency calls for help to 911, the newspaper stated.
Devin was able to get out to the woman, who was clinging to a rock, and took her to a much larger rock where the pair was able to sit together while they waited for first responders, according to the KJ.
Waterville police, who classified the response as a "mental health call," as well as the Waterville Fire Department, responded with a rescue boat and were safely able to get the distraught woman out of the dangerous waters, according to the newspaper.
To Devin, we say, "Thank you."
Thank you for being at the right place at the right time and for being willing to risk your own life to save another. You, sir, are a hero.
