When director Marc Webb took control of the 'Spider-Man' franchise with 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' he must have faced a huge decision: should he stick with a costume similar to the one worn by Tobey Maguire or go in a completely different direction. The final design, while different in the details, was definitely in line with the character's traditional red and blue outfit. However, other options were weighed and some concept art from the film's development has made its way online, giving us a very different look at what could have been.

The concept art (which originated here) showcases Spider-Man costume designs that look more like the 'Spider-Man 2099' comic book than the original character. If audiences already take issue with how a teenager could build the reasonably simple original costume, they'd have twice as many questions about these designs, which look more like futuristic battle armors than spandex. There's no denying that they're slick and cool, but they would have looked massively out of place in Webb's reasonably realistic universe. The outfit worn by Andrew Garfield in the new film may not break any new ground, but at least it makes sense for the character.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' opens on May 2, 2014.
