Former University of Maine goalie, Jimmy Howard (Detroit Red Wings), is wearing a new shade of blue these days, in the form of the USA Hockey's red, white and blue. Howard is one of three goalies representing the United States men's hockey team in Sochi, Russia. Howard is currently suiting up third behind 2010 Vancouver hero, Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres), and current stand out, Jonathan Quick (LA Kings).
College hockey was back in action this weekend, with exhibition games taking place across the country. The University of Maine men started the season by hosting Dalhousie University of Nova Scotia. In a game that many Maine fans have anticipated since the firing of longtime coach Tim Whitehead, a 5-1 win was exactly what was asked for
You are either a dog person, or you are not. I was born into a family who has always had a love for these four legged creatures. I was two months old when my parents brought Murphy, a golden retriever, into our family. Since Murphy, we have had 4 golden's- 2 at a time since I was seven. Murphy, Jake, Tucky, Gradie and now Brody.
While perusing the headlines this morning, I came across an article on a Marine named Alex Minsky and it really made me think. Minsky is a 24-year old Marine who lost his leg to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2009. His injury is pretty traumatic and his story is incredible. Lost leg, brain injury, 45-day coma- its pretty touching.
Hockey players are a different breed of people. Not only do you have to be prepared for huge body checks and face down sharp skates and hard sticks, but you also have to be willing to throw your body in the way of sharply-hit frozen rubber pucks.
