My Favorite Christmas Verse Was First Published Dec 23, 1823…I Had No Idea It Was That Old

I don’t have a ton of childhood Christmas memories, but I do remember my father reading to me ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and acting out some of it VERY dramatically. I still love the poem to this day.

I never really thought about where it came from...but here you go. It was first published December 23 in 1823.  The poem was titled "Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas". It was published anonymously in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel.  We know it now as 'The Night Before Christmas," and it is no longer anonymous, it was written my Clement C. Moore.
