By Percentage, Lewiston-Auburn Schools Are Less Funded Than Other Towns

I don't know all of the answers, nor do I pretend to have the answers. Last Tuesday Auburn residents, like other municipalities' residents, voted on school budgets and other town or city issues. I voted yes for 6.9 school budget increase, which I know would result in a tax increase. The proposed increase was voted down by 60% of the voters. OK, for Auburn it's back to the drawing board.

Third Lewiston Apartment Fire Early This Morning

This morning, Lewiston had its third apartment complex fire in just a week. The first two were set off allegedly by 12-year-old boys, unrelated to each other except maybe by inspiration. I went down to today's scene to get a sense, feel and look at last night/this morning's L fire. Again, thankfully nobody was hurt. Sadly it is the same kind of scene with the firetrucks from in town and out of town, news cruisers, Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc.

Help The Lewiston Fire Victims This Morning

In the past week there have been two major apartment complex fires in Lewiston engulfing seven buildings in total. Thankfully no one was hurt in either blaze, but there are many people without places to stay and many more with nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever they grabbed on their way out of the building as it was going up in flames. There are figures as high as 210 people homeless, but at the last news report I saw, they said 175 people were displaced. No matter which is accurate, that is huge number for the city.

Last night I drove to the scene of the Lewiston apartment fire. It was dark and smoky and I really couldn't get a good concept of how bad the blaze was, so I went again this morning. Oh my word, what a sad sight of charred remains, half standing buildings and melted roofs.

A massive fire can beseen from quite a distance and is raging out of control in Lewiston at 111 Blake Street. Be careful driving through the area if you have go through that part of Lewiston as there are firefighters from Lewiston and surrounding towns battling the blaze.

In Lewiston there is a new restaurant called Mama's Cabaret opening that will serve alligator tail and crawdads. A little redneck south in Maine? The new restaurant will be on Park St. near Main right in Downtown Lewiston.

Lewiston to Lose 160 Jobs at Jim Beam Facility

The makers of Jim Beam bourbon announced that it will shut down production at its Lewiston facility and shift that work to a facility in Kentucky. 160 people work in the Beam’s plant in Lewiston that makes Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack Rum.
