40,000 Maine Residents May Have Had IDs Stolen In Massive Hack

If you are a frequent traveler, there is a chance that your personal information may have been compromised.  This is especially true if you love to visit some of the bigger casinos across the United States.

According to an article in Maine Biz, 41,397 Mainers may have had their personal information stolen during a cyber attack against Caesar's Entertainment.

NBC is reporting that the massive entertainment company suffered a ransomware attack in early September 2023.  Hackers reportedly gained access to the license numbers and social security numbers of thousands of rewards members.  Over 40,000 of those members appear to be residents of Maine.

For those who do not know, a ransomware attack is where a hacker (or hackers) attack a company and steal the personal information of the company's customers.  They then hold that information for ransom.  If the company pays, they (supposedly) delete the information.  If not, they sell it to the highest bidder or use it to scam the company's customers.

According to the NBC article, it appears that Caesar's Entertainment did end up paying the ransom.  However, we have no way of really knowing if the scammers deleted the personal information.

The NBC article quotes a rep for the company as saying that they have:

taken steps to ensure that the stolen data is deleted by the unauthorized actor, although we cannot guarantee this result

According to the company website, Caesar's Entertainment owns about 50 hotels / casinos / resorts across the country.  They have places in Las Vegas, Arizona, California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and more.
