A Dog Has Died & Six People Have Been Displaced Following Augusta Apartment Fire
It took seven fire departments and nearly three dozen fire fighters to get a Thursday morning blaze under control on Leighton Road in Augusta.
According to the Kennebec Journal, the fire broke out at around 8:00 Thursday morning at 114 Leighton Road. The apartment building sustained significant damage, primarily to the second floor, before flames were extinguished.
Following the fire, it was discovered that a dog had perished in the fire, though no human injuries were reported. However, six people have been temporarily displaced by the fire and the American Red Cross is currently assisting those families with temporary accomodations.
The KJ reports that the likely cause of Thursday's fire was electrical in nature. In addition to Augusta Fire, Gardiner, Vassalboro, Chelsea, Hallowell, Winthrop, Togus Fire all responded to the scene.
The fire was reported just after 8:00 AM and crews were packing up gear as early as 9:30 the KJ reported.
Augusta Fire Department Lieutenant Chief, Jason Mills, told the Kennebec Journal,
“It was just a good job by our crews that got right in and made a quick knockdown. We always appreciate the support we get from our mutual aid towns that come in. They really make it a lot easier for us; … manpower is limited on every department now, so we rely pretty heavily on our mutual aid departments when we have significant fires. I was glad to see them show up in good numbers.”
