Here’s the thing about Maine. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived here; you’ll always find new ways to reveal you aren't 100 percent local.
Maybe it's the words you use, the food you order, or even how you dress for the woods. And when you mess it up? Oh, you’ll hear about it.
And there are definitely some things I've learned you should never say to Mainers.
What Are Some Things Never to Say to Mainers?
I consider myself a half-Mainer. Why is that? Well, I was born in Pennsylvania and bred here in Maine. Honestly, I love this place so stinkin' much.
However, because I am still very much attached to my Pennsylvania roots, I sometimes make mistakes, even after living here for over 20 years.
But with that experience of simple life, I am able to help the next person avoid what I have done way too many times.

Just recently, I called an Italian a 'Hoagie', and a local Mainer gave me a long speech about how incorrect I was. What was I thinking?
I also once asked why someone had their pants tucked into their socks. I assumed it was some kind of bogus fashion statement. I was wrong. Mainers tuck for ticks. It's for survival.
So, because of the recent faux pas, I decided to make a list of the things I have learned not to do or say to a local in my 30 years here in Maine.
