A massive apartment fire broke out last night in Lewiston at the corner of Birch and Bartlett streets, bringing in fire crews from Sabattus and Auburn along with Lewiston.

I wrapped up work here at the radio station last night and hopped in my car and drove home like any other night. As I rolled into Lewiston on Main Street, I saw a glow in the sky and smoke in the distance on my left. I unrolled my window, and didn’t smell anything really at the moment, but I decided to be nosy and check it out.

As it turns out as you now know from the news it was a multi-unit apartment fire on the corner of Birch and Bartlett streets.

News reports say everyone got out without injury or worse. Of the 17 apartments at 101 Birch St. 11 were occupied and the area fire departments were on hand for a few hours putting out the blaze, only for one to come back this morning to take care of a hot spot or two in the roof.

The Red Cross is helping the families displaced with shelter and other necessities.

There is no known cause at this time, only said that the fire looked to have to have started in the 3rd or 4th floor.

The State Fire Marshall is looking into a cause, details as we get them.
