A unique type of short-term rental has made its debut in Ellsworth, offering couples a private getaway designed specifically for adults.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Hidden Honey Homes, a Florida-based company that converts single-family homes into adult-only vacation rentals, opened its first Maine location on December 1, 2025. The Ellsworth property is one of only four locations currently operated by the company across the country.

According to co-founder Erica Corpening, the concept is designed for couples looking to reconnect, relax, and spend quality time together away from everyday distractions.

The home sits along the Union River in Ellsworth and blends in with nearby properties from the outside. Inside, however, the rental has been customized with couples in mind. The BDN says while the home includes a standard kitchen, living area, one bedroom, and one bathroom, additional rooms have been transformed into themed spaces designed to encourage intimacy and relaxation.

The property is designed for two guests and requires a three-night minimum stay. Pricing varies depending on the season, with summer rates reaching more than $1,300 per night, according to the company’s booking site.

The newspaper said guests must be at least 25 years old to book the property. The company also says the home is thoroughly cleaned between stays using hospital-grade disinfectant and additional sanitation procedures.

The Ellsworth location was selected in part because of its proximity to outdoor attractions. The property is marketed as being close to Acadia National Park, along with other coastal destinations and recreational opportunities in the region.

Ellsworth currently does not have active restrictions on short-term rentals, although the city did implement temporary rules during the pandemic that have since expired. The addition of this rental comes as short-term rentals continue to grow across Maine, particularly in coastal communities.

Hidden Honey Homes also operates locations in Florida and North Carolina. The company says the Maine property has already gained strong interest, with guests drawn to the area's coastal scenery and quiet setting.

Despite the unique concept, the company says it has not received complaints from the local community since opening earlier this winter.
