There is something about spring in Maine that always feels a little overdue, which is probably why the Maine Lilac Festival feels so special. It returns on May 23 in Augusta and takes over Viles Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for one of the prettiest days of the season.

The real reason to go is the lilacs. The arboretum is in peak bloom, and you can spend hours wandering through rows of lilac bushes in every shade of purple, pink, and white, with that unmistakable scent following you the whole time.

What I like most is that it is more than just a flower festival. There are nature-based activities and hands-on learning stations set up around the grounds, so there is always something to stop and explore. The Makers Market is another highlight, with local vendors selling handmade soaps, candles, art, baked goods, and all kinds of things that somehow make you want to bring home half the market.

The food is local too, with pastries, farm-fresh treats, and fresh coffee to carry around while you wander. There will also be awesome live music filling the air throughout the day, which makes the whole festival feel even more relaxed and welcoming. At only $5 for admission, it feels like one of the easiest and best spring outings in Maine.
