Augusta To Layoff Dozens Of City Employees

According to the KJ, between now and May 27th, the City of Augusta plans to lay off dozens of city employees.

The layoffs are intended to compensate for a decrease in revenues (licensing and registrations, for example) and an increase in operating costs due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The projected budget shortfalls are expected to exceed $1 million.

Larger city facilities are expected to take the brunt of the layoffs.  The Augusta Civic Center, where most of the upcoming events have been cancelled or postponed, for example.  Also, the Lithgow Public Library and Buker Community Center childcare programs.

Nearly all city employees will need to take two furlough days before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th).  One in May and one in late June.
