Bar Harbor Landmark To Become More Accessible
Over its 85 year history, tens of thousands of people have screened some of the greatest films of all time at Bar Harbor Criterion Theatre. Now, even more people will be able to enjoy some of the best seats in the house.
While The Criterion Theatre's lower-level seats have always been wheelchair accessible, the 88 seats in the balcony have only ever been accessible by stairs. Thanks to a very generous gift, that is all about to change.
According to WABI TV, the theater is in the process of installing an elevator that will allow wheelchair access to the prized balcony seats. Additionally, people who simply have trouble walking will be able to ride the elevator and sit in the seats near the landing.
The project was made possible thanks to a donation from Karol Foss, a lover of the arts.
Criterion staff hope to have the project done in time for the peak theater season.
