Accidental Fire in Blue Hill, Maine Linked to Discarded Smoking Materials
A weekend structure fire in Blue Hill has been ruled accidental after investigators determined the blaze was caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials.
According to a press release from Maine Department of Public Safety, the Blue Hill Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 76 Kingdom Road on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at approximately 5:59 p.m. Fire crews arrived on scene and worked to bring the situation under control.
Due to the nature of the fire, the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to assist in determining the origin and cause. Investigators returned to the scene on Sunday, April 12, during daylight hours to conduct a more detailed examination of the property.
Following their investigation, officials determined the fire started as a result of the careless disposal of smoking materials. The incident has been officially classified as accidental.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
While officials did not immediately release details about the extent of the damage, incidents like this serve as an important reminder about the dangers of improperly discarded cigarettes and other smoking materials. Fire officials often urge smokers to fully extinguish materials in a non-combustible container and avoid discarding them near structures, decks, or dry vegetation.
Careless smoking remains one of the leading causes of residential fires across Maine and nationwide, particularly as warmer weather approaches and people spend more time outdoors. Fire officials encourage residents to take extra precautions to help prevent similar incidents.
