One of the great things about living in Maine is how much wildlife there is.  We have birds, foxes, bears, and more.  Of course, there's even more wildlife off Maine's coast.  Sharks and several types of whales, for example.

A few days ago, a man vacationing in Vinalhaven got some great video of a Minke Whale.

According to a Bangor Daily News article, Jay Borden vacations in Vinalhaven's Old Harbor.  Last week, he was outside enjoying his morning coffee when he spotted a minke whale swimming just off shore.

Borden estimated that the whale was about 20 feet long.  Apparently, the whale decided the harbor was a great place to stick around.  Borden says the sea-going mammal was around until early evening.

He was able to get this great video of the whale:

A Minke Whale is a type of Baleen whale.  Depending on the whale's gender, they are between 25 and 30 feet long and can weight over 12 tons.

Despite the fact that the demand for whale meat has fallen over the decades, some countries still hunt whales.  These include South Korean, Japan, and Norway.  In 2022, whalers from Norway took nearly 1,000 Minke Whales.
