Maine residents may soon notice faster power restoration during outages, thanks to a growing network of smart technology being added to Central Maine Power’s grid.

WGME reported that CMP announced it has recently completed the installation of roughly 250 new smart devices across its service territory. These high-tech tools are designed to detect problems and automatically reroute electricity, helping customers get their power restored much more quickly when lines are damaged.

These additions join the 220 smart devices that have been installed over the past two years. According to WGME 13, those earlier installations have already improved reliability for more than 54,000 customers. The company says the devices can sometimes restore electricity in as little as five minutes which iss far faster than traditional repair methods that rely on crews arriving at the scene.

By redirecting power around trouble spots, the devices are expected to boost reliability for approximately 50,000 more customers. CMP believes this technology will play a key role in reducing the length and impact of outages, especially during Maine’s severe storms, the news station reported.

Looking ahead, the utility says it isn’t slowing down. Plans are already in place to add another 500 smart devices by the end of next year, expanding the program’s reach even further.

Company officials say the ultimate goal is to build a smarter, more resilient grid that keeps homes and businesses in Maine connected with fewer interruptions, even in challenging weather conditions.
