Get Your EZ Pass! Maine to Likely End All Cash Toll Collection
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to many people here in the Pine Tree State. At some point or another, I'm sure we've all been travelling the Turnpike, saw a toll, and thought 'gee I can't believe they still have cash lanes'. Well, it looks like that may soon be coming to an end.
Back in 2005, Maine converted over from its earlier ETC technology to a new feature (that we all still use today) called EZ Pass. To this day, EZ Pass is still the most used method of passing through tolls, not just in Maine, but the entire eastern seaboard. And, if you're still rocking it old-school cash style, your days may be numbered. Wow, that sounded morbid.
According to The Kennebec Journal, The Maine Turnpike Authority will eventually begin phasing out the cash lanes of all the toll plazas. While there is no firm deadline that this will happen by, it is definitely worth noting that this is the direction the MTA is planning on going.
Additionally, the MTA is soon going to begin experimenting with a new technology that may eventually even replace the EZ Pass units that people have to keep attached to their windshield. This potential new tech would allow for drivers to just place a small sticker on their windshield that would still be picked up by the sensors as they drove through a toll plaza.
