5 Interesting Facts About Maine That Even People Born Here Probably Didn’t Know
It's no surprise that living in Maine is literally the best thing ever. I mean, aside from our brutal winters, all the tourists and the fact it takes 3 hours to get anywhere.
Honestly, other than those few things, Maine is the dopest.
But, even as lifelong and native-born Mainers, there are still some interesting factoids about the Pine Tree State that most of us didn't know.
Now, how did I determine that most Mainers didn't know these things? Well, I've lived here all my life, and I didn't know some of these things.
While logging on and snooping around on Maine.Gov would be seemingly pretty boring, the state's website is actually filled with all kinds of things that are good for residents to know.
The other day while I was trying to figure out which kind of registration I needed for a work vehicle, I inadvertently came across a page on the site dedicated to "Facts About Maine."
Thinking I knew it all, I didn't pay much attention to it at first, but as I began reading I was shocked at how many of the little bullet-point facts I had never heard before.
For example, one of the first facts listed on the website is that the state of Maine has a population of over 1 million people. This is something I would argue most of us know at this point.
However, another fact I read, that I didn't know, is that Maine's Aroostook County is SO big, you can actually fit the entire states of Connecticut and Rhode Island inside it and STILL have space left over. That's wild.
I also learned that Maine has more than 25 ski areas. Obviously I know Maine is popular for skiing, but I always seem to only think about the big 3 of Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Saddleback.
Maine has lots of lakes, right? No surprise there.
Well, according to Maine.Gov, Vacationland is actually home to more than 6,000 lakes and ponds and 5,100 rivers and streams. I don't know about you, but that's insane, isn't it?
Another interesting thing I learned is about our parks.
Maine is home to dozens of state parks and one national park, however, the amount of land mass they consume is crazy. Maine state national parks take up a whopping 436,000 acres of land. Mind blown.
The list from Maine.Gov goes on to give other facts about blueberries, potatoes, seafood and other "common sense" things that most of us know already, but those were just a few of the ones that stood out to me.
