One of the many things that Maine is known for is lighthouses.

Back in the 1800s, the state was home to hundreds of them.  These days, we still have dozens of them.  Many are accessible to the public.  Some are even open to the public.

Unfortunately, one of the most recognizable lighthouses in Maine will not be open to the public in 2024.

According to WABI, the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde will not be opening to the public in 2024.

Like many structures along Maine's coast, the lighthouse was battered by the storms that we had in December and January.  Those storms did extensive damage to the lighthouse, making it unsafe for the public to access.

The plan is for repairs to be made this fall, allowing the lighthouse to reopen in 2025.

The closure includes the walkway and lighthouse tower, but other parts of the property are still open to the public.  The keeper's house, the oil house, and the 19th-century barn, for example.

The Marshall Point Lighthouse is arguably the most famous lighthouse in the state.  Yes, many people would say that title belongs to the Portland Head Light, but the Marshall Point Lighthouse was featured in one of the biggest movies of the 1990s.

Here's a clip from Forest Gump showing the lighthouse:

Fortunately, there are dozens of other lighthouses for you to visit this summer.  In fact, there are over 60 lighthouses in the state.

Visit Maine has put together a really cool interactive map showing the location of all of Maine's lighthouses.  See the map HERE.
