One of the Best Oyster Bars in America Is Found in Maine
We take our seafood pretty seriously here in Maine. In fact, we have one of the best oyster bars in America!
Honestly, it's probably an understatement to say we take our seafood ‘seriously’ here in Maine. Seafood is one of our 'main' identities, and it's part of what defines us. When people think of Maine, they think of blueberries, Stephen King, and of course, our incredible seafood. Oysters, in particular, are a huge hit both across the country and right here at home.
But according to who? Who's out there deciding which oyster bars are the best in the country, and what even makes one oyster bar better than another?
The editors at Food & Wine compiled their guide to ‘America's Best Oyster Bars’ by selecting their favorite oyster restaurants across the country. They focused on places known for offering fresh, high-quality oysters, whether sourced locally or from various coasts.
The editors considered not just the seafood itself but also the ambiance, service, and overall experience of each restaurant.
Their goal was to create a coast-to-coast list that showcases the best oyster spots in America, from classic seafood shacks to upscale dining establishments.
With that in mind, which oyster restaurant in Maine has been named one of the best in the United States?
According to the editors at Food & Wine and their article highlighting 'America's Best Oyster Bars,' one of the top picks, appearing early on the list, is Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland. Here’s what Food & Wine had to say about Eventide's inclusion:
This restaurant in the Old Port district specializes in Maine oysters, including Winter Point Selects, a variety raised by the renowned harvester John Hennessey, in West Bath. "The Winter Points are about an inch and a half in size and have a very clean, bright, and briny taste," said Eventide co-owner Arlin Smith. "A smaller oyster is special because it has amazing salinity." Hennessey also provides the restaurant with big, meaty seven- to 10-year-old oysters, which chef Andrew Taylor roasts in a thick, Korean-style barbecue sauce. The caramelized oysters are served in their shells and topped with coleslaw, crispy fried potato strings, and a drizzle of chile oil.
What are your thoughts on Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland being named one of America’s best oyster bars by Food & Wine?
