One of the Most Peaceful Tourist Attractions in the Nation is in Wells, Maine
With Americans working longer hours and more jobs than ever before, it's hardly a stretch to say people could really use some peace and quiet. And while Maine may be known as Vacationland, not every vacation in the state is slow, plodding and peaceful.
But it could be if you know the right places to visit. And according to the travel blog CasaGo, one of the most peaceful tourist attractions in all of America happens to exist right here in Maine.
That would be the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, a sprawling, nearly 10,000 acre nature preserve that people can visit to slow down, chill out and truly appreciate some of the creatures and quiet around them.
While the home base of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is located in Wells, the nature preserve actually spreads across several towns and cities in York and Cumberland counties from Kittery to Cape Elizabeth. It was established in 1966 to protect estuaries for migratory birds that was being threatened by poisonous chemicals and human expansion.
Visitors can enjoy the wildlife refuge in a variety of different ways. There are three different hiking trails where people can spot birds as well as many of the deer that call the nature preserve their home.
More adventurous visitors can kayak through portions of the nature preserve by putting in at one of the 4 available boat launches.
Or if you're someone that wants to observe nature directly from the comfort of your own vehicle, you can do just that while observing much of the wildlife that calls the preserve home.
All the details about park fees and the best times to visit the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Preserve can be found here.
