It was 2pm on Saturday when I left the gym. I was stopped on Center street in Auburn at the light. I was about to take a left to get on the bridge when I looked left and was shocked to see something on the ground.

It was a knife or shiv or shank? I am not sure what you call it now but it looked like a homemade weapon. This knife looked like something MacGyver would never approve of. It had some type of leather wrapping or rope around it. This isn't something that you'd normally think to look down and see just chillin on the ground.

There is not much that shocks me anymore, but this, is up there because it's a pretty dangerous weapon left on the ground for anyone to grab.

Was this knife involved in a crime and thrown out the window? Normally this spot where the knife was laying is where homeless people go to ask for money.

I am not saying this knife belongs to any of those individuals, but it is where they stand.

I took a video as I was parked at the light.

Now, obviously I use light humor with this because it's not something you see every day, but it is extremely concerning for me as a citizen of Lewiston/Auburn. I immediately get ahold of my friends at Lewiston Police Department and reported it so that they could call their friends at Auburn PD to see if someone could go and grab it.

I think this is something we all need to look out for. As adults and parents of the future generation, protection and safety in our cities is priority.

Like me, if you see a dangerous weapon on the ground, please report it to the authorities immediately.

It is likely that the shank was picked up by the authorities because I reported it so quickly but it could also have been grabbed by anyone and we don't want that to happen.

Let's all work together to continue to keep an eye out for the safety of our cities in Maine.
