According to The Village Soup, a historic Rockland building that had been slated for demolition has been saved by a local company.

Maine Sport Outfitters, which operates stores in Rockport and Camden, have purchased the commercial building at 279 Main Street in Rockland.  They intend to open a third location in the building.

The announcement was made just a day before the Rockland Planning Board was to hold a final review on another company's proposal to demolish the building in order to turn the space into a parking lot.

The Main Street building was built in 1953 to replace one of several buildings that burned down in December of 1952.

The sporting goods company plans to occupy about 12,000 square feet of the building.

Stuart and Marianne Smith opened the first Maine Sport Outfitters in Camden in 1976.  The stores carry products aimed at those who love outdoor adventures.  They sell everything from clothing, to shoes, to bikes and canoes.

They plan to start renovating the building immediately and hope to have the location open by Summer 2021.
