Maine Grandmother Brought to Tears During First VR Experience
So, I had a beautiful weekend, family and friends were over, the kids were running around being crazy, we were thoroughly enjoying our Sunday.
Little did I know, the visit would end with me having to change my pants, along with everyone else.
Let me set the scene for you all: my mom, YiaYia, decided to say yes to dipping her toes into the 21st century by trying Virtual Reality for the first time.
We gifted our son with a Meta Quest Oculus for Christmas and the kids were playing with it.
I knew immediately this would be a whole experience because my mom is still very new to technology. So, what could go wrong, right?
We set her up with a virtual tour of the Notre Dame Cathedral and cue the hilarity!
The moment she "stepped" into the cathedral and realized she was high up, the screaming started.
It was YiaYia’s version of panic and it was the funniest thing I've ever heard in my whole entire life. I can't lie when I say that there’s something oddly satisfying about introducing parents and grandparents to our wild world of 21st-century technology.
Check out the video below, posted from my Facebook page. Are you following me yet?
At one point, she was so convinced she was going to fall so I literally and physically had to hold her upright.
She flailed, reaching for what I assume was the virtual balcony railing, at one point screaming, “I’m going to die in Paris, and I’m not even in Paris!”
We were all pretty much doubled over, tears streaming down our faces.
Meanwhile, YiaYia was trying to "step away" from the edge, except there was no edge, just my living room carpet.
At one point, she peeked over the “railing,” screamed, and yelled at us like we had personally betrayed her. This was awesome.
Then Moondog, our ever so curious family pup, decided to come up to sniff Yiayia. Big mistake.
In her mind, she was still up high in Paris, so when something “unexpected” touched her, she let out a scream that could’ve been heard all the way to the actual Eiffel Tower.
Poor Moondog looked so confused, like, “What did I do?!”
Meanwhile, the rest of us were losing it because, at this point, YiaYia was practically on the verge of peeing her pants and honestly, so were we.
For Yiayia, the Oculus is now officially classified as an "amazing hazard."
Honestly, no high-tech gadget will ever top that moment, unless, of course, we manage to convince her to try virtual bungee jumping next.
Who knows? She is the most adventurous YiaYia I know.
