Missing Maine Man Found Alive in Missouri After Allegedly Faking Death
We’ve got a wild story this morning about a Maine man who disappeared more than a year ago, only to be found and arrested this past week over a thousand miles away.
According to WGME 13, police say 51-year-old Gregory Heimann of Maine had a warrant issued for his arrest back in April of 2024. Instead of facing those charges, investigators say he allegedly tried to take the ultimate escape route by faking his own death. Heimann was last seen up near the Canadian border, launching a canoe into the river, and then… nothing. He vanished, leaving many to believe he was gone for good.
But fast forward to this past week and Heimann turns up in one of the last places you’d expect: an Amtrak station in La Plata, Missouri. WGME says that’s where police finally caught up with him, ending a year-long mystery.
Now, he’s expected to be brought back to Maine to face justice, and the list of charges isn’t small. Heimann was originally accused of lying to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The news station reported that prosecutors say he claimed to have been wheelchair-bound since 2004, unable to walk or stand. But the problem? Investigators here in Maine documented him on numerous occasions walking and standing without any mobility aids at all.
So, in addition to the federal charges already on the table, he could be looking at more charges at the state level once he’s back.
From faking his death in a canoe near the Canadian border to being hauled off a train platform in Missouri, this is one story that sounds more like a movie script than real life. But it’s very real, and now, the next chapter will be written back here in Maine.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
