Two Injured After Boat Catches Fire on Moosehead Lake

Two people were injured after jumping from a burning boat on Moosehead Lake Tuesday afternoon.

The Greenville Fire Department and Maine Warden Service were called to an area near Sugar Island shortly after noon following reports of a boat fire. When crews arrived, they found the vessel fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters said two people were on board when the fire broke out. Both jumped into the lake to escape the flames and were quickly pulled from the water by other boaters who were nearby.

According to WMTW, one person was treated at the scene for burn injuries and released. The other was taken to C.A. Dean Hospital in Greenville for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

The burned boat was later towed to Lily Bay State Park, where firefighters were able to fully extinguish the remaining flames. The vessel was destroyed and removed from the area.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office were both consulted as part of the emergency response and the investigation into what caused the fire.
