Coffee, Coastlines & Lobster Rolls: A Sober Maine Memorial Weekend
Memorial Day weekend can feel like everything suddenly revolves around drinking, parties, and feeling like you need to have some huge plan. But if you're sober, trying to stay sober, or honestly just wanting to spend your weekend differently, Maine gives us so many good ways to slow down and enjoy life without needing alcohol involved.
Sometimes getting outside, moving your body, eating good food, and spending time with people who actually care about you ends up feeling better anyway. Here are a few ideas that I genuinely think make for such a good weekend here in Maine:
Grab a vanilla iced latte from Bintliff's in Gardiner with a friend and walk the rail trail along the Kennebec River.
Sometimes the simplest plans end up being the best ones. Catch up over coffee and walk along our beautiful riverbanks with no pressure and no chaos, just fresh air and good conversation.
Sober tip: Grabbing a coffee with a friend and walking somewhere beautiful helps you stay busy while still being social. Spending time with someone who genuinely cares about you and isn't pushing you to go drink can make a huge difference.
Saturday, May 23rd, the Back Cove Trail in Portland is hosting a community walk and 5K race with food, raffles, and activities supporting Maine households.
Community events are so underrated. You're active, around people, and there are things to do and focus on besides drinking.
Sober tip: Events centered around movement, community, and giving back can feel way more rewarding because you're actually doing something and making memories instead of sitting around feeling like you need alcohol to have fun.
Hike Mount Battie in Camden.
This one always hits. Especially with beautiful weather in Maine, getting up there and seeing that view never gets old. It is honestly such a good way to get grounded again.
Sober tip: Taking your mind off things and getting into a hike can be one of the best resets. Fresh air, movement, and being surrounded by nature has a way of clearing your head and bringing you back to the moment.
After a weekend workout, or even doing the known "Murph" workout that everyone seems to be doing this weekend, grab a lobster roll at Highroller, Red's Eats, or your own favorite Maine spot.
You've earned it. Maine summers and lobster rolls are hard to beat.
Sober tip: Enjoying food sober after physical exercise is honestly such a good feeling. You appreciate it more, you feel good after earning it, and those little moments start becoming things you actually look forward to.
At the end of the day, Memorial Day weekend doesn't need to revolve around bars or drinking to still be a really good weekend. Some of my favorite days have honestly just been coffee with a friend, a good hike, moving my body, eating something amazing, and remembering that life still feels really full when you slow down and enjoy it.
Stay busy, enjoy our beautiful state, and give yourself permission to make memories that actually leave you feeling good afterward.
