The term 'staffing crisis' is something we've all heard a lot over the last couple of years as businesses struggle to acquire and maintain quality employees through the pandemic. However, one of the most important places where Mainers want there to always be a full staff, is the local police department.

According to WGME 13, the town of Sabattus is facing more than just a police officer shortage- it's an all-out crisis.

The department, which usually operates with nine officers, is now down to only three. And, at the time of this article being published, one of those three officers is currently out on medical leave. This leaves only a couple of officers to respond to calls in the town.

A letter from Sabattus town manager, Dr Timothy Kane, recently went out to residents highlighting the shortage of police. Kane told residents that the town is budgeted for 9 police officers but only have three currently. The town is currently seeking more police but are having difficulties attracting potential new officers because other departments are able to offer better incentives.

While police are still responding to calls as priority, Sabattus residents should be aware that non-emergency calls may have a much higher than normal response time due to the crisis. Androscoggin County Sheriff's Officer has been made aware of the dire situation and will be providing mutual aid as necessary and when possible.
