Maine Police Investigate Serious Pedestrian Crash in Portland
Portland Police are investigating a serious pedestrian crash that left a 75-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries Thursday evening.
According to WGME, the incident happened around 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of Franklin Street and Marginal Way, one of the city’s busiest crossings and a major connector between downtown Portland and the peninsula. Police say the woman, a Portland resident, was attempting to cross Franklin Street when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
WGME went on to explain that the car was being driven by a 48-year-old Portland man. Officials say the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police, and no charges have been filed as of Friday morning. The investigation, however, remains active.
The news station said police interviewed several witnesses who reported that the woman had been running with a group of people shortly before the collision. Multiple witnesses told officers the group entered the crosswalk and attempted to cross the street against the pedestrian signal, placing them directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
Emergency crews quickly arrived on scene and provided medical aid before transporting the victim to Maine Medical Center, where she is being treated for life-threatening injuries. Her identity has not yet been released, WGME reported.
The Portland Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information — including dashcam footage or surveillance video — to contact investigators at (207) 874-8532 or (207) 874-8575.
Police say pedestrian crashes remain a major safety concern in the city, especially at high-traffic intersections like Franklin and Marginal Way, which has been the site of several serious collisions in recent years.
