According to the Boston Globe, the New England Patriots have just released starting quarterback, Cam Newton. The Globe, sighting a league source, reported that newly signed rookie QB, Mac Jones, would become the team's new starter.

Jones, who was a first-round draft out of Alabama in April had an impressive exhibition season with New England. Jones threw 36-52 for 388 yards, including a touchdown and fifteen overall drives.

In comparison, veteran quarterback Cam Newton threw 14-21 covering 162 yards with a touchdown and an interception after the first three games of the preseason. This news comes as a bit of a surprise considering the fact that longtime NE coach, Bill Belichick, referred to Newton as 'our quarterback' even after the signing of Mac Jones.

Even though he was released, Newton will still make out okay monetarily. Back in March of this year he signed another one-year deal worth $13.6 million (maximum) and a $2 million signing bonus. Out of that, $3.5 million was guaranteed to him.
